Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a complex, progressive, and potentially debilitating condition. It's most prominent symptom is severe and unrelenting pain, which affects the skin, muscles, nerves, and bone, but most often occurs in an extremity such as the arms or legs. The syndrome is sometimes referred to as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

As the disease progresses, it can become more and more painful. The pain is intense, similar to a burning sensation, and is not significantly reduced with normal pain medication. Unfortunately, RSD usually spreads to other parts of the body in 70% of cases. There are two subgroups of RSD: Type I and Type II. In Type I cases, no specific underlying nerve injury can be detected. In Type II, a distinct major nerve injury can be identified at the underlying start of the condition.

RSD may result from either severe or minor injuries and is often triggered by a broken bone, nerve injury, or other soft tissue injury that does not heal normally. The condition is believed to occur in one to two percent of all fractures. RSD can also been found in patients who have had various types of surgery. However, in approximately 33% of cases there is no identifiable injury.

Onset of symptoms may be immediate or delayed for a month or more. The first indication of RSD is pain that is more severe than what would be expected by the injury that caused it. Often times there is swelling and the skin may change color. The skin may become affected to the point that even hair will not grow on it. A patient becomes unduly sensitive to trauma in other parts of the body; therefore patients with RSD must take special precautions before having any surgery.

The most common symptoms of RSD include:

• Severe burning pain
• Edema
• Pathological changes to bone and/or skin
• Excessive sweating
• Excessive tissue swelling
• Extreme sensitivity to touch in the affected area
• Movement disorders
• Frequent infections
• Recurrent migraine headaches
• Muscle weakness, Atrophy of the muscles , Muscle spasms
• Decreased motor function
• Skin changes , such as skin temperature
• Changes in nails

There is no one single test that can diagnose RSD, yet it is crucial that the disease be diagnosed quickly, because early treatment leads to better results. The longer pain and dysfunction have been going on, the less favorable the long term outlook becomes. Possible treatment options include medication, physical therapy, psychological support, pain management support, sympathetic nerve blocks, and dorsal column stimulation. Even if treated early and properly, the disease may be chronic and the pain may worsen. Patients should be cared for by physicians who know have experience treating RSD.

Although, it may not have been medical negligence that caused you to develop Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, you should discuss your recent injury, surgery, or other medical treatment, with an attorney to determine if it is possible. An attorney can discuss with you the possibility of a failure by your physician to timely diagnosis RSD (usually within a three month period), a failure to refer you to a neurologist or a pain clinic, or a failure to properly treat your condition. These actions may constitute medical negligence and if so, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. It is important that victims of this disease consult with an attorney who specializes in RSD and understands how painful and debilitating that it can be. Treatment for this disease may be extensive, prolonged and costly. RSD can be financially devastating since you may not be able to work. This, in turn, can lead to depression and emotional difficulties. Be sure that you contact an attorney to determine if you may be entitled to compensation for the pain and suffering that you are going through.
